More than a century of Breton history
In the heart of Brittany, in the Redon area, at Renac, the du Halgouët family has watched over Château du Brossay and its estate for centuries.
The du Halgouët family acquired this land in the 18th century. An old family of the Breton nobility, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, it distinguished itself over the centuries through its service to the kingdom and later to the State, notably in military, administrative and political careers.
Its history is closely tied to Breton heritage, in particular the manor and later the Château du Halgouët, which gave their name to one of its branches. Like many families of the old nobility, the du Halgouët preserved a legacy marked by a sense of duty, attachment to their roots and the passing on of their traditions.
The château, as we see it in its present form, replaced a Directoire-style château that was demolished once the new building was completed, in 1895.
It was built by Colonel Maurice du Halgouët and his wife, née Alice de l’Espée, who came from Lorraine and whom he had met while stationed in eastern France.
The outbuildings and the château together form a rare site, so carefully were they designed: the stables, the orangery, the model farm (with its cowshed, dwelling house, bread oven and barns), the walled garden and its greenhouse, the park… all built to be in complete harmony with the château and with one another.
Listed as a Historic Monument since 2008, the estate today embodies the union of heritage, nature and the art of living. Through the generations, it has crossed the ages without ever losing its soul.
